Air Fryer Goji-Spiced Sweet Potato Fries

These Goji-Spiced Sweet Potato Fries offer a delightful twist on a classic favourite. The natural sweetness of the sweet potato is beautifully complemented by a savoury and slightly tangy spice blend that features the unique, subtly sweet and slightly tart notes of ground goji berries. The air fryer crisps them up perfectly on the outside while keeping the inside tender, making for an addictive and healthy snack or side dish. The taste is a harmonious blend of earthy, sweet, and a touch of subtle fruitiness from the goji, with a hint of spice.

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 500-600g), peeled and cut into 1/4 to 1/2-inch thick fries (matchsticks)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • For the Goji Spice Blend:
    • 1 tablespoon dried goji berries, finely ground (use a spice grinder or mortar and pestle)
    • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for a little heat)
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

Instructions and Method:

1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes:

* Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into even 1/4 to 1/2-inch thick sticks. Aim for consistency so they cook evenly.

* For extra crispiness, you can soak the cut sweet potatoes in cold water for 20-30 minutes, then drain and pat them thoroughly dry with paper towels.1 This step is optional but recommended for a crispier result.

2. Make the Goji Spice Blend:

* In a small bowl, combine the finely ground goji berries, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, ground cumin, black pepper, cayenne pepper (if using), and salt. Mix well to ensure all ingredients are evenly distributed.

3. Season the Sweet Potatoes:

* In a large bowl, drizzle the sweet potato fries with olive oil (or avocado oil). Toss to ensure all fries are lightly coated.

* Sprinkle the goji spice blend over the oiled sweet potato fries. Toss again thoroughly until all the fries are evenly coated with the seasoning.

4. Preheat the Air Fryer:

* Preheat your air fryer to 190°C (375°F) for 5 minutes.

5. Air Fry the Sweet Potato Fries:

* Place the seasoned sweet potato fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the basket; cook in batches if necessary to ensure even cooking and crispiness. Overcrowding will steam the fries instead of frying them.

* Air fry for 15-20 minutes, shaking the basket every 5-7 minutes to redistribute the fries and ensure even browning and crisping.

* Continue cooking until the fries are golden brown and crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside. Cooking time may vary slightly depending on the thickness of your fries and your specific air fryer model.

6. Serve:

* Once cooked, immediately transfer the Goji-Spiced Sweet Potato Fries to a serving dish. Serve hot and enjoy!

Tips:

  • Even Cuts: The most important tip for air fryer fries is to cut them as evenly as possible. This ensures they all cook at the same rate.
  • Don't Skip the Dry: If you soak the sweet potatoes, ensure they are completely dry before adding oil and seasoning. Excess moisture will lead to soggy fries.
  • Single Layer is Key: This cannot be stressed enough for air fryer success. Air needs to circulate around each piece for proper crisping.
  • Shake it Up: Regular shaking or tossing of the basket is crucial for even cooking and browning.
  • Goji Berry Grinding: A dedicated spice grinder works best for finely grinding the dried goji berries. If you don't have one, a mortar and pestle can work, or you can try finely mincing them with a sharp knife if they are soft enough.
  • Adjust Spices: Feel free to adjust the amount of each spice to your preference. If you like more heat, add more cayenne.
  • Leftovers: Leftover fries can be reheated in the air fryer at 180°C (350°F) for 3-5 minutes until re-crisped.
