Air Fryer Recipe: Mini Honey Buns
Air Fryer Mini Honey Buns
This recipe takes a classic sweet treat and adapts it for the air fryer, creating perfectly golden and tender mini honey buns in a fraction of the time. The air fryer's convection heat gives these buns a delightful crisp exterior while keeping the inside soft and moist. Each bun is a swirl of buttery cinnamon and sugar, drizzled with a warm honey glaze that soaks into every layer. They are a delightful indulgence for breakfast or dessert, offering all the comforting flavours of a traditional bun with the convenience of a modern appliance.
Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 250g all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp active dry yeast
- 30g granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 120ml warm milk
- 30g unsalted butter, melted
For the Filling:
- 30g unsalted butter, softened
- 40g brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
For the Honey Glaze:
- 50g powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp milk or water
Instructions & Method
- Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
- Make the Dough: In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and melted butter. Stir until a shaggy dough forms, then knead on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Prepare the Filling: In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon to create a paste.
- Shape the Buns: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle about 12x18 inches on a lightly floured surface. Spread the cinnamon-sugar filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border on one of the long edges.
- Roll and Slice: Tightly roll the dough into a log from the long edge. Cut the log into 12 equal slices.
- Air Fry: Preheat your air fryer to 160°C (320°F). Lightly grease the air fryer basket or line it with a perforated parchment liner. Arrange the mini buns in the basket, leaving some space between each one to allow for air circulation. You may need to cook in batches.
- Cook: Air fry for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Make the Glaze: While the buns are cooking, whisk together the powdered sugar, honey, and milk (or water) in a small bowl until smooth.
- Glaze and Serve: Once the buns are out of the air fryer, immediately transfer them to a wire rack. Drizzle generously with the warm honey glaze. Serve warm.
Tips
- Don't Crowd the Basket: For best results, air fry the buns in a single layer. Overcrowding the basket will prevent them from cooking evenly and becoming golden on all sides.
- Check for Doneness: Cooking times can vary between air fryer models. The buns are done when they are a deep golden brown and feel firm to the touch. You can also test with a toothpick inserted into the centre.
- Warm Place for Rising: For a quick rise, you can place the dough in a warm oven that has been turned off, or near a warm spot in your kitchen.
- Make Ahead: You can prepare the mini buns up to the slicing stage and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator overnight. Let them come to room temperature for about 30 minutes before air frying.
