Air Fryer Avocado Fries

Air Fryer Avocado Fries are a revelation, transforming the creamy, buttery fruit into a surprisingly crispy and utterly addictive snack. Imagine a warm, tender avocado interior that practically melts in your mouth, encased in a golden-brown, seasoned crust with a satisfying crunch. Unlike deep-fried versions, these air-fried "fries" achieve an impressive crispness without excessive oil, making them a guilt-free indulgence.1 Each bite offers a delightful contrast of textures and a rich, subtly nutty flavour, enhanced by a hint of spice. They are incredibly versatile, perfect on their own, or as a unique side dish, offering a taste experience that's both exotic and comforting. 2 The air fryer makes them perfectly golden without deep frying.

Ingredients

For Serving (Optional Dipping Sauce):

Instructions and Method

1. Prepare the Avocados

  1. Slice Avocados: Cut each avocado in half lengthwise and remove the pit.7 Using a spoon, carefully scoop out the avocado flesh in one piece.

  2. Cut into Fries: Place the avocado halves flat-side down on a cutting board. Slice each half into even "fry" shapes, about  thick. You should get about 6-8 fries per avocado half. The key is ripe but firm avocados to hold their shape.

2. Set Up Breading Station

  1. Flour: In a shallow dish, place the all-purpose flour.
  2. Egg Wash: In a second shallow dish, place the beaten egg.
  3. Seasoned Panko: In a third shallow dish, combine the Panko breadcrumbs, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix well to distribute the seasonings evenly.

3. Bread the Avocado Fries

  1. Dredge in Flour: Take one avocado fry and dredge it thoroughly in the flour, shaking off any excess.
  2. Dip in Egg: Dip the floured avocado fry into the beaten egg, ensuring it's fully coated. Let excess egg drip off.
  3. Coat in Panko: Transfer the egg-coated fry into the seasoned Panko breadcrumbs. Press the Panko firmly onto all sides of the avocado fry to ensure a thick, even coating. This coating is what will give you the crunch.
  4. Repeat: Place the breaded avocado fry on a clean plate and repeat the breading process with all remaining avocado slices.

4. Air Fry the Avocado Fries

  1. Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to  () for .
  2. Arrange in Air Fryer: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Arrange the breaded avocado fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they are not overcrowded.8 You will need to cook them in batches.

  3. Spray: Lightly spray the tops of the avocado fries with cooking spray. This helps them crisp up and turn golden brown.
  4. Air Fry: Cook for , flipping them halfway through (at about ) and spraying again if needed. Cook until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides.
  5. Repeat Batches: Remove the cooked fries and repeat with any remaining batches.

5. Serve

  • Serve the Air Fryer Avocado Fries immediately while hot and crispy.9

  • They are delicious on their own or with your favourite dipping sauce, such as sriracha mayo, lime crema, or chipotle aioli.10

Tips for Air Fryer Success

  • Ripe but Firm Avocados: This is crucial. Overly soft avocados will be difficult to slice and handle, and they won't hold their shape as well when cooked.
  • Even Coating: Ensure a good, even coating of Panko breadcrumbs. This creates the best crispy texture. Press them on firmly.
  • Don't Overcrowd: Cooking in a single layer is essential for optimal crispness. Overcrowding the basket will steam the fries instead of frying them, resulting in a soggy texture.
  • Spray for Crispness: Don't skip the cooking spray! A light spray before and halfway through cooking helps the breading get extra crispy and golden.
  • Serve Immediately: Avocado fries are best enjoyed fresh out of the air fryer. As they cool, the creamy interior can soften the crust.
  • Seasoning: Feel free to experiment with other seasonings in your Panko, such as chilli powder, cumin, or even a dash of nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavour.
